Wearing a Sweater Under a Blazer (and Suit)
Wear a fine-gauge V-neck. It leaves your shirt collar and tie knot on show, and a thin knit fits under the jacket. A crew neck works too, but only with no collar showing.
Under a suit the rule is the same with less room, so go thinner and plainer.
A blazer and a suit are two different problems
A blazer is an odd jacket, usually solid navy, worn with trousers that do not match. It is the more forgiving of the two, and a sweater is one of the easiest ways to dress it down.
A suit is a matched set, and its jacket is cut closer to the body. A sweater still works, doing the job a waistcoat used to. There is just less room, so the knit has to be finer.
Why the V-neck, specifically
A blazer frames an open triangle between the lapels. A V-neck cashmere sweater repeats that triangle and lets the shirt fill it. The collar, the top of the shirt and the tie knot all sit inside the V.

Fineness matters too. A knit under a jacket has to fit in the room left for a shirt. At 12–16 micron, cashmere gives more warmth for less thickness than coarser wool.
The tie, and where the knot sits
A tie under a sweater works when the knot sits above the point of the V and the tie disappears into the knit just below. It fails when the V is so shallow it cuts across the knot, or so deep that a stretch of tie shows.
To check, put the sweater on over a knotted tie and see where the point of the V lands against the bottom of the knot.
Two more tips. Use a tie thin enough not to bulge under the knit, since a thick lined tie shows as a ridge. And skip the tie bar: under a sweater it just makes a lump.
Under a suit: what changes
- Thinner still. A suit jacket has less room than a blazer. If your suit is already close-fitting, a sweater may not fit inside. Wear it with the trousers and leave the jacket at home.
- Plainer still. Solid colours only. A patterned knit inside a suit is one idea too many.
- Do not near-match the suit. A charcoal knit in a slightly different charcoal suit is the classic mistake. Go clearly lighter or darker.
- Mind the waistband. A long knit bunches over the trousers and shows as a roll through the jacket.
- It replaces the waistcoat, not the shirt. Shirt on, collar out, tie optional.
A sweater with dress pants, no jacket
Take the jacket away and the sweater is the top layer. Now people see its shoulders, hem and cuffs.
- Close through the body. Extra fabric could hide under a jacket. It cannot now.
- Shirt tucked, sweater untucked. A tucked sweater bulks the waistband. An untucked shirt under an untucked sweater means two hems fighting.
- Hem just below the waistband. Our body lengths run 64–73 cm from the shoulder. Dress trousers sit higher than jeans, so the hem lands near the top of the seat.
- Either neckline works here. A crew over a collared shirt looks relaxed. A V-neck looks more formal.

Colour, and the Midnight warning
Most people asking this have a navy blazer, so:
- Safest under navy: Ash Grey, Oat, Sandstone. Light against dark, clean and easy.
- Boldest under navy: Crimson Red if you want colour, Charcoal Black if you want none.
- Avoid under navy: Yale Blue and Indigo. Both are good colours that will look like a failed match. Indigo is a royal blue, not a navy. Both blues are on Blue Cashmere Sweaters for Men.
Midnight is not navy
Our Midnight is a near-black aubergine. It is an excellent dark neutral, but a poor match for a navy blazer. The navy in our range is Yale Blue, which is why it sits on the avoid list above.

Lay the sweater and the jacket flat and measure both the same way.

Chest 48–56 cm flat, so 96–112 cm around. The jacket needs to be comfortably bigger, or it creases from the button. Sleeve 60–68 cm from the shoulder seam. If it is longer than the jacket sleeve, a knit cuff shows where a shirt cuff should. Length 64–73 cm. Between sizes and buying for tailoring? Take the smaller. The sweater to buy for it
For business dress, buy a plain fine-gauge V-neck cashmere sweater in a dark neutral. It lets a shirt and tie do their job, works under a blazer or a suit, and still looks right with dress pants and no jacket.
