Cashmere Gifts for Men

Buying for a man whose size you do not know
This is the one that goes wrong, and it goes wrong more often for gifts than for anything else, because the person choosing the size is not the person wearing the sweater. Sizing is the single largest complaint in men's cashmere: across four competing products we counted 50 negative fit and size mentions, and one of those sellers concedes “May run small” in its own listing bullets.
Three ways out, in order of how reliable they are.
1. Buy the free-size quarter zip
One size, no choice to get wrong. It measures 65 · 50 · 60 cm (length · chest · sleeve, laid flat). Read that against the size chart below and you can see exactly where it lands: the 50 cm chest is a medium, the 65 cm body sits between small and medium, and the 60 cm sleeve is the shortest we make.
Which gives you the honest limit of this answer: if he wears L, XL or 2XL in an ordinary sweater, the free size will not fit him and there is no larger one to order. 2. Measure a sweater he already owns
Lay one of his sweaters flat, measure straight across the chest from armpit to armpit, and match it to the chest column. This beats asking him his size, because a label size is a brand's opinion and a centimetre is not.

3. If he is between two sizes, take the larger
A sweater that pulls across the chest is never worn again; a sweater that is a centimetre generous is worn all winter. For a gift this is not a close call.
The exchange window is the part nobody reads until it is too late
Everything above is a way of reducing the odds of the wrong size. The backstop is the exchange policy, and for a gift specifically it has a trap in it that is worth knowing before you wrap anything.

Why this matters more for a gift than for a normal order
The 24-hour clock starts when the parcel arrives, not when the wrapping comes off. Buy in early November, wrap it, put it under a tree, and by the time he tries it on the contact window has been closed for six weeks. There is one unromantic fix and it works: open the parcel when it arrives, check the measurements against something he owns, then re-wrap it. Sort out an exchange in November, not on Boxing Day.
Colours that are safe to choose for somebody else
The safe rule for a gift is to buy the colour he already owns in another fabric, not the colour you would like to see him in. Reconciling three independent signals — the swatches cashmere sellers actually stock, the colour facet Google Shopping orders its results by, and search volume by colour — gives the same ranking every time: black first, then navy, then grey and charcoal, then camel and brown.

Two warnings, both of which cost people money
Navy is the riskiest colour to buy for another person. It is the single biggest source of one-star reviews in men's cashmere, and the complaint always runs in the same direction — what arrives is brighter than the photograph. “Navy is not navy. It is royal blue.” Small-batch dyeing makes that worse, not better. Every colourway here is photographed from its own dye lot rather than digitally recoloured from one sample, but a screen is still a screen. If you are giving navy, ask us for a photograph of current stock first.
Midnight is not navy. It is listed at #221b2c and it reads aubergine in daylight. It is a good colour and a bad substitute — nobody who says “get him something navy” means this one. The navy in this range is Yale Blue, #2e3758.

These sweaters are made and dispatched in Pokhara, Nepal. That is a genuine disadvantage in exactly the eight weeks of the year that matter most for gifts, and pretending otherwise is how a sale turns into a one-star review.

What that estimate does not cover: customs clearance in your country, national holidays at either end, and the December peak, when every courier in the chain is at capacity. In this category more than half of all reviews are posted between November and January, and at least one competitor collected its worst review for nothing other than a six-week delivery.
So: order well before December
Not “order by the twelfth”. We have not published a last-order date, and the honest reason is that we do not have one we would stand behind — courier cut-offs from Kathmandu are not confirmed yet, and a date you would plan a present around is the last thing to guess at. If it is going to be tight, there is a decent fallback that costs nothing: give the card and a photograph on the day and let the parcel arrive when it arrives. A cashmere sweater is not a perishable, and January is still winter.

One thing worth asking about before you order, because it is a recurring complaint in this category rather than a hypothetical: presentation. Two of the three-star ratings in the competing products we sampled came from gift buyers who received a garment with no tags, bunched into a plastic bag. If the parcel is going straight under a tree, say so when you order rather than assume the packaging is handled.
