Red Cashmere Sweaters for Men

The quarter zip is a single-colourway garment — a muted grey-blue — so it is a dash on six of our seven colour pages. We would rather show you the dash than quietly drop the column.
Crimson Red on both necklines
Both shots are of the Crimson Red dye lot itself, not one grey sweater digitally recoloured. Small-batch dyeing varies, so a recoloured image would be a lie about the one thing you are choosing.
What crimson is, and what it is not
Reds split into two camps and it decides everything about what you can wear them with. A warm red leans orange — pillar-box, scarlet, tomato. A cool red leans blue — crimson, cherry, raspberry. Ours is firmly the second. At #cc2045 there is more blue than yellow in the mix, which is why it looks sharp next to grey flannel and slightly wrong next to a tan suede jacket.
It is also not a burgundy. Burgundy is a crimson with black in it, worn as a neutral. This is at full chroma. It is a colour that people will notice and comment on, which is either the point or a reason to buy the Navy Cashmere Sweaters for Men instead.
How to wear it
One red sweater is a wardrobe. Two is a costume. Build around a single piece and let everything else stay quiet:
- Crew neck, on its own, over grey flannel trousers. The strongest version of this. Mid-grey is the only trouser colour that lets a cool red be loud without looking dressed-up.
- V-neck over a white or pale blue oxford. The collar breaks the block of colour at the throat, which makes the red much easier to carry in an office. A tie under it should be navy or grey, never patterned.
- Under a charcoal sport coat. Works. Under a navy blazer it also works, and is the more traditional of the two.
- With raw indigo denim. The blue in the denim and the blue under the crimson are talking to each other. This is the easiest weekend version.
What to avoid: olive, tan and mid-brown tailoring, where the warm base fights the cool red; and a second red anywhere on the body, including a burgundy shoe. Black trousers are technically fine and read a little severe.
Who it suits
Cool reds are kind to cool complexions — pink or olive skin, dark or ashy hair. If your skin runs ruddy, a crimson this saturated sits close to your own colour and can flatten your face. In that case the crew neck is the better buy than the V-neck, because it holds the colour further from your jaw.
Age has nothing to do with it and neither does season. Red cashmere is bought in December because it photographs well under a tree, but it wears best in February when everything else you own is grey.
How this dye behaves
Deep reds are the least reliable colour on a screen. Camera sensors and displays both clip saturated red before they clip anything else, so a crimson photographs either flatter or hotter than it is, almost never correct. Of the fourteen colourways in this range, this is the one where we would most encourage you to ask for a photo of current stock before you order.
It is also the colourway to be careful with in the first few washes. Cold water, wool detergent, on its own, out of direct sunlight to dry. Strong reds fade in sun faster than any other shade — not because of the fibre, but because of what ultraviolet light does to red dye molecules. Dry it on a flat towel indoors and this is a non-issue for years.

The parent's swatch codes end in either -dye or -natural. This one ends in -dye, which we read as a dyed lot rather than a natural fleece shade — but we have asked Pokhara to confirm what the suffix means before we state it as fact.
A little pilling in the first two or three wears is normal on any cashmere, and it is more visible on a saturated colour than on a mid grey. Here is why it happens and what stops it.

Questions about the red
Is it a bright red or a deep red?
Neither extreme. Crimson Red is #cc2045 — a blue-shade crimson that sits between a pillar-box scarlet and a burgundy. In daylight it reads unmistakably red. Under warm indoor light it cools slightly towards raspberry. It is not an orange-red and it is not an oxblood.
Why was this colour listed as pink?
Because the parent catalogue labels its swatches with internal dye-lot codes rather than customer-facing names, and this lot is coded Pink-21. The hex it produces, #cc2045, is a red by any reading. We renamed it Crimson Red. The code stays in the workshop where it belongs.
Will the red bleed in the wash?
Wash it on its own the first two or three times, in cold water with a wool detergent. Any deep red can give up a little surface dye early in its life. It costs nothing to be careful and it protects everything else in the basin.
What colour trousers go with a red cashmere sweater?
Mid-grey or charcoal flannel first, then raw indigo denim, then navy. Crimson's blue undertone is what makes those three work. Avoid tan, olive and mid-brown trousers — warm earth tones fight a cool red rather than sitting beside it.
