How to Wear a Sport Coat with a Sweater
Wear a fine-gauge crew neck. Its closed collar sits flat inside the lapels, and a thin knit fits in the room the jacket left for a shirt. A chunky sweater pulls the jacket into an X at the button.
Why the crew neck is the default
A sport coat frames a triangle between the lapels. Whatever fills it is the outfit.

A crew neck cashmere sweater adds the least bulk for its warmth, and bulk is the whole problem. At 12–16 micron, cashmere traps more warm air in less thickness than coarser wool. That is why it works so well under tailoring.
Three measurements decide whether it works
A tape measure and a flat table settle this in a few minutes. Lay the sweater and the jacket flat and measure them the same way.

- Chest. Ours are 48–56 cm flat, so 96–112 cm around. Your jacket’s chest, measured the same way, needs to be comfortably bigger. If not, it strains at the button.
- Body length. Ours run 64–73 cm. If the sweater is longer than the jacket, its hem shows below, which looks like a mistake.
- Sleeve. Ours run 60–68 cm from the shoulder seam. This is the one that catches people out.

The sleeve, where it usually goes wrong
A jacket sleeve is cut short so a shirt cuff shows. A sweater sleeve reaches the wrist bone. So the knit cuff can end up level with or past the jacket sleeve, which looks improvised.
Measure both from the shoulder seam to the cuff. If the sweater sleeve is longer, you can size down, accept the knit cuff as the look, or wear a shirt and let its cuff show. Do not push the sweater sleeve up. That bags the cuff for good, and the forearm already pills early.
Shirt, tee, or nothing under the sweater
Under a sport coat, a crew neck on its own is a complete outfit. A shirt adds a collar at the throat and a cuff at the wrist. If you do not want either showing, skip it.
- Nothing. Cleanest. At 12–16 micron there is no prickle, but the knit takes up skin oils, so you wash it more.
- A thin tee. Invisible, and it means far fewer hand washes. The everyday choice.
- A collared shirt. Use a button-down or a spread with stays. A soft collar collapses under the knit, and under a jacket it has even less room.

Pairing the colour and the texture
A sport coat is usually the textured piece: tweed, houndstooth, corduroy, a check. So choose a plain knit, clearly lighter or darker than the jacket.
- Brown or grey tweed: Charcoal Black or Graphite underneath, so the jacket’s pattern stands out. Or Olive, our only green, if you want colour. See Green Cashmere Sweaters for Men.
- Navy or dark solid: Oat or Sand. Light against dark is the easiest contrast to get right. Compare them on Brown Cashmere Sweaters for Men.

- Avoid: a knit almost the same shade as the jacket. A near-match looks like a failed match. A clear gap looks deliberate.
We dye in small lots, so shades vary a little between batches. Screens vary more.
Five ways this goes wrong
- The X at the button. Creases pulling from the button mean too much bulk. Wear the jacket open or choose a thinner knit.
- A knit cuff past the jacket sleeve. Measure first.
- A cable or chunky knit. It fights a textured jacket and the armholes. Save it for under a coat.
- A collapsed shirt collar. Firm collar or no shirt.
- An oversized sweater. Extra fabric folds visibly at the sides under a jacket. This is one time not to size up.
